Going into Wrestlemania this year, there were plenty of questions going around regarding the matches. Would Jey Uso be able to finally defeat GUNTHER and win his first world heavyweight title? Can Stratton pull off a miracle and retain against Charlotte Flair? And biggest of all, who would Paul Heyman choose as all three men of Night One’s main event surrounded him. We found out the answer to all these questions tonight, and here are the results of Mania: Night One!
World Heavyweight Championship: Jey Uso def. GUNTHER (C)
Jey Uso wins his first World Heavyweight championship by defeating GUNTHER. This victory would occur via submission with Jey using GUNTHER’s own sleeper hold against him after hitting him with three consecutive splashes. Jey Uso would proceed to celebrate with his brother Jimmy, who GUNTHER had previously left bloodied in a brutal beatdown a few weeks ago on Monday Night RAW.
World Tag Team Championships: The New Day def. The War Raiders (C)
The New Day picked up their thirteenth pair of world tag team titles at Wrestlemania by defeating The War Raiders in controversial fashion. Whilst the referee was distracted by Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston would trip up Ivar as he went for a springboard. The duo would capitalize by hitting Ivar with their finishing move “Daylight” and as Xavier pinned Ivar, Kofi would hold down the champion’s leg just out of the referee’s view from the outside.
Jade Cargill def. Naomi
After Naomi caused Jade Cargill to be out of action for several months by pushing her off a ledge onto a car windshield, the duo would finally come to blows on night one of Wrestlemania in a fantastic match-up that expertly showed off both women’s strengths, between Jade Cargill’s strength and Naomi’s agility. Ultimately, Jade Cargill’s power would prevail as she would pick up the victory, achieving vengeance with Jaded.
United States Championship: Jacob Fatu def. LA Knight (C)
Jacob Fatu’s hot streak continues to be all gas, no brakes, as Jacob Fatu overthrows LA Knight as the United States champion. LA Knight would get beat post to post, but would be able to get in some heavy hits against the Samoan Werewolf like an Avalanche German Suplex, and even countering Fatu’s moonsault with a B.F.T from OUTTA NO WHERE! But none of that would be enough to keep Fatu down and Jacob Fatu would be able to pick up his first championship in the WWE.
El Grande Americano def. Rey Fenix
On the same day that WWE announces the acquisition of AAA, El Grande Americano took on Rey Fenix who was filling in for Rey Mysterio who was not medically cleared to compete after an injury on yesterday’s Smackdown. With AAA’s Vikingo sitting at ringside, these two would showcase breathtaking moves as Fenix displayed his patented agility and balance and Americano showed off more of his arsenal for those unaware of him, including a moonsault senton!
Towards the end of the match, El Grande Americano (who is definitely not Chad Gable) would load his mask with a metal plate and this would prove to be the difference maker as Fenix would damage his leg kicking Americano in the face. The end would come as Americano caught Fenix mid-air with a headbutt, before following up with a diving headbutt with the loaded mask.
Notably, Vikingo would enter the ring and check on Rey Fenix after his defeat.
WWE Women’s Championship: Tiffany Stratton (C) def. Charlotte Flair
After a highly volatile and controversial build-up, Charlotte Flair and Tiffany Stratton finally had their match at Wrestlemania after Charlotte’s Royal Rumble victory. The two had previously drawn a buzz around the match as both women appeared to go off-script, with Stratton bringing up Charlotte’s failed marriages and Charlotte claiming that she had Ludwig Kaiser (Stratton’s real boyfriend) in her DMs. All eyes were on the match to see how it would play out, and it ended up being a brutal, scrappy match with very few moves being performed cleanly and both women showing off scrapes and bruises by the end of the match.
Ultimately, to the shock of many, Tiffany Stratton was able to pick up the victory and retain against Charlotte with an as always gorgeous Prettiest Moonsault Ever.
Main Event: Seth Rollins def. Roman Reigns & CM Punk
With tensions brewing since the Royal Rumble, Seth Rollins and CM Punk had found themselves once again unable to escape each other. And now, Roman Reigns had been added to the mix as the man he unwillingly teamed up with at War Games to earn back his Ula Fala was now responsible for costing him a world title match at Wrestlemania.
As time progressed and we found ourselves getting closer and closer to Mania, the concept of a favor owed to Punk by Heyman became a bigger and bigger factor until the favor was finally revealed… Paul Heyman had to be in CM Punk’s corner for his first ever Wrestlemania Main Event. With a favor owed to Punk and his loyalty to the Tribal Chief tearing Heyman in two different directions, a new factor would be added as Seth Rollins would force Heyman to owe him a favor by showing him mercy and not hitting him with a Curb Stomp in a moment of vulnerability.
The match would begin and it would not take long for Seth and Punk to make their way into the crowd, tearing each other apart and utilizing chairs from the crowd and trash cans to take each other down. Curb stomps, spears, and GTS’s would be aplenty while Heyman would be visibly conflicted in the background until all three men were down. Heyman would then grab a steel chair, conflicted between giving it to Punk and Roman until he seemingly made his choice… CM Punk.
Heyman would help Punk to his feet and guide him closer to Roman so the weakened Punk could utilize the chair against The Tribal Chief, but Heyman hadn’t chosen Punk. Heyman would strike Punk with a low blow, causing The Second City Saint to crumple like paper before he was pummeled with a steel chair by Roman Reigns! And now, it was Seth’s turn as he rose to his feet against the ropes. Heyman would point out Seth to Roman, point out that The Visionary was on a silver platter… and while Roman was distracted, Heyman would reveal his TRUE choice… Seth Freakin’ Rollins.
With the aid of Seth Rollins, Wrestlemania: Night One would come to a close with The Visionary picking up a victory over two of his most fiercest enemies and a new ally by his side.
